Express yourself

As a creative, I am acutely aware of my innate need for self-expression. In my childhood days, I was always dancing, weaving captivating tales in the confines of my bedroom and bringing them to life through movement. Those moments filled me with an overwhelming sense of fulfillment and made me feel truly alive.

Humans use the arts not solely to provide pleasure for the outside world but, more often than not, to find inner peace. Otherwise, why would actors, writers, musicians and, artists persist in their arts for years without pay and recognition? For many, their arts offer a means to explore and understand their own identities. Artists delve into their inner selves, uncovering layers of their being through their creative expressions.

Will AI take this away?

Prepare for an alarming truth: AI threatens to snatch and devalue the very talent that feeds the soul of artists. For some, it’s their livelihoods at stake. When AI stifles creativity and diminishes the worth of genuine talent, where will these artists turn? The prospect is dire—denied recognition, their artistic spirit may face a bleak future. We must confront this reality and advocate for a world that celebrates and preserves the beauty of human creativity.

So take this alarming truth and throw it onto a blank canvas until a new picture emerges. You, the creative, will find a way around this because that is what creative people do.

Let’s delve into history and reminisce about famous artists and their extraordinary journeys to recognition. Take Vincent van Gogh, for instance. In his time, he only managed to sell a single painting, yet today, he stands celebrated as a true genius. But who should bear the blame for the sad and miserable life he endured? While his struggles were profound, it was those very challenges that paved the way for his enduring legacy. The depth of his art, the emotions woven into his brushstrokes—these are the priceless treasures he left for generations to cherish. I’d choose to walk in his footsteps, for through his struggles, he crafted an eternal legacy that touches hearts and souls even today. He was not alone. As humans we have an incredible talent to map out futures we shall never be part of. Like the old man who plants a tree knowing he will never sit in its shade.

The prediction of mass unemployment that is coming in the next few years because of AI, is going to hit us all if we do not do something to prepare for the onslaught of new technology. Humans turn to their jobs for a sense of purpose and to define who they are. Without a sense of purpose, there is doom and gloom. There will be the naysayers and the fear mongerers, that love to relish in misery. My fellow creatives you will hear them all on the sidelines as you create your next masterpiece, shouting at you through social media and news channels. Hang on there, take it all in and do with it what you will.

Meaning and expression are essential aspects of human life that contribute to our well-being, personal growth, and societal development, this is what you are seeking but I do understand the need to put food on the table, we have to be valued at some point.

When we have a sense of meaning, we feel connected to something greater than ourselves, whether it’s a cause, a passion, or our relationships with others. It gives us a reason to wake up every day with enthusiasm and drive. Expression allows us to share our emotions, thoughts, and experiences with others. It provides an outlet for joy, sadness, anger, and all the complexities of human emotions. Expressing ourselves authentically fosters emotional well-being and a sense of connection with others. We must not let go of this because I fear much worse if we do.

Embrace the competition AI may paint better and faster pictures than us, but it will lack that meaning and expression of the artist, but we know though, don’t we? Our audience is tiny in the understanding of what we portray.

AI will not be able to make us surrender our ability to self-express. Instead, let’s explore fresh, innovative ways to work hand-in-hand with technology. Challenges have always been part of our creative journey, ever since that first colorfully printed image wowed the world and everyone could have art on their walls for a cheaper price..

I do not know what is coming around the corner. Surprises await! If we harness AI for good, we might inch closer to that utopian dream we’ve longed for.

So here is what I say, find your creative haven, your outlet for worth. It’s a challenge, but then, it always has been that way. If you can embrace the future with open arms, and let your imagination soar! the chances of being left behind will be less.

Expression is the root of creativity and innovation. When we can freely express ourselves, we are more likely to think outside the box, challenge norms, and come up with groundbreaking ideas. A society that values expression fosters innovation and progress.
