I often wish I had created the same for my own kids, maybe I did, I will have to ask them.
Travel creates memories. It doesn’t matter where you go – you just go somewhere. Then come home, stick some photos in an album or write about it.
During Covid it has been difficult to plan holidays and many people have stayed home or only planned small trips away. As soon as the warmer weather arrived people swarmed the beaches and tourist spots forgetting they were in the midst of a Pandemic. This is what happens when you lock people away.
Years ago, we just did not have the money for long distance travel. My father would only drive for a few hours and it would take us ages to get anywhere. We went to holiday camps and played Hi-di-hi.
My beautiful spontaneous crazy Mother then surprised us.
I wrote this poem about it.
Voyages extrordinaires,
when you and me were wearing flares,
and drinking champagne out of flutes,
the south of france and kinky boots.
My mother sat upon the wall,
sun glasses perched so would not fall,
my flips have flopped and one has dropped,
our cranky car the engines stopped.
Everyone out, we are singing free,
we have cheese sandwiches and a flask of tea,
gendarmes wave, allo allo,
Uncle Dave will steal the show,
The sun is hot we chatter on,
to Mungo Jerry,s summer song.
Dads stayed home, he never came,
this trips too mad and no ones sane…………
